Om Saha Naav[au]-Avatu

Saha Nau Bhunaktu

Saha Viiryam Karavaavahai

Tejasvi Naav[au]-Adhiitam-Astu Maa

Om shantih shantih shantih

(The above Shlok is from the Bhagavad-Gita {chapter4 shlok 24} which is also chanted together as Bhojan Mantr)

The act of eating is considered to be a sacred time (ie if we regulate our meals and not eat all through the day)

As per Hindu scriptures a meal should begin with the appropriate bhojan prarthna; a prarthna of offering food to the Brahm within us all. A prarthna of gratitude and peace. So that the bhojan taken gives us good positive energy and peace.

A simple thought of being grateful for the food that is before you is powerful enough to turn it into positive energy.

Take only as much as you are going to eat. Wastage of ann (food) is being disrespectful of the food you receive.
